GPS Head of the River
The GPS Head of the River last weekend on Saturday and the NSW Rowing Schoolgirls Head of the River on Sunday marked the end for some of our students of summer sport at TAS. The performance of our boys and girls at Penrith on the weekend showed huge commitment and highlighted how much each of the crews have achieved throughout the course of the season. To be competitive at this elite level requires discipline long hours of training and absolute dedication to the crews, and this is what distinguishes rowing as a sport. It is through this that personal growth occurs and I think that every member of the TAS rowing club has noticed this in themselves throughout the year. It was an historic occasion for the school on Saturday at the GPS Head of the River as we entered our eights team in the First VIII race at the regatta for the very first time and the crew performed as well as anyone could have expected given their preparation time over the season. I offer congratulations to all crews, both boys and girls, and the success of our girls First IV crew in achieving a podium finish should be noted. To my mind, this has been a most successful season and I offer my thanks to Ben McDougall and his coaching team for picking up the reigns after the departure of Will Caldwell and we should be celebrating the fact that TAS Rowing has been going for a decade.

For the cast and crew of our major stage production of 2021, months of rehearsing and preparation all come together for the program of shows in the Hoskins Centre beginning next week. Like many others, I am looking forward to the chance to see all the hard work come to fruition, as well as being able to participate in an audience with the parents and supporter of the cast and crew. I wish them all well for the production season ahead.
TAS Regional Tour
As mentioned last week we are entering the final phase of our Regional Tour with interviews in Moree, Narrabri and Gunnedah and once again I look forward to meeting prospective parents and potential new students in their own backyard.
Unfortunately because of this commitment, it will be the first P & F Parent Liaison lunch I have missed in a decade.

TAS Rugby Carnival
The TAS Rugby Carnival is coming up at the end of the April holidays on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 of April. This is going ahead and is a big event for TAS and the P&F. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be seeking volunteers to help and having planning meetings – so watch this space, emails and Facebook. Parents at School
As you may have heard, on Monday the NSW Health Covid rules around having parents at school have been relaxed. We will let you know what this means for P&F functions as soon as we’ve worked through the implications.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent-Teacher Interviews for students in years 6 and 7 will be held next week – Wednesday 24 March and Thursday 25 March. This is an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s progress. All parents should have received an email containing their web code to book interview times. If you have not received this email with parent teacher information please contact Mrs Vickey O’Brien – [email protected] or phone 6776 5806.
For the first time in a year parent-teacher interviews will be face to face and will be held in Middle School Classrooms.
Information regarding Year 12 Parent Teacher Interviews will be sent out at the end of this week.

International Maths Day
Day – International Maths Day – was on 14 
March. This year it fell on a Sunday, so TAS celebrated on Monday.
This year the theme was Maths for a Better World. Maths classes on the day were full of fun activities including a Chaotic Dance Challenge, Scavenger Hunt and “If the World Were a Village”. Pies and chips and chips were served for lunch and our fabulous catering staff organised some special pi cookies.
There was a poster competition across the school and the following posters were awarded prizes.

This week I congratulate a number of our students who have achieved success in their chosen fields. The TAS First IV Rowing Crew (Eliza Ward, Sophia Grant, Hannah Neilson, April Draney and Emma Benham) won a Bronze Medal at the NSW School Girls Head of the River. In addition, Joshua Casey finish 5th in the 15 years 2000m Steeplechase and Toby Hall finished 4th in the U/20s 3000m Steeplechase at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships. Toby Inglis finished 13th at the National Mountain Biking Championships and following last weeks NCIS Swimming Carnival, TAS has a number of students who have gained selection to compete at the NSW CIS Swimming Championships in Sydney.
None of these achievements are possible without hard work, sacrifice and persistence.
The MS/SS Athletics Championship Friday 26 March. Some events will be held outside the Friday timetabled events. If you choose to compete in these events you will be exempt from sport on those afternoons.
Tuesday 16 March – Open 3000m event for Boys and Girls & Triple Jump Boys and Girls
Thursday 18th March – 1500m for Boys and Girls & Javelin for 17 & 18 Boys and Girls Only
In addition to these days Javelin for Age Groups 12-16 & Discus for Age Groups 12-14 will be run during PE classes in the weeks prior to the Championship.
Parents are welcome to attend the Championship on Friday 26 March. PLEASE ensure that you follow Covid Safe Regulations (Scan in using the QR Code, Sanitise, Social Distance). A reminder that parents are NOT allowed on the track and are requested to stay on the Western side of Wakefield.

TAS Rugby 2021
We have had a positive response from students selecting rugby this year, with numbers increasing as students select their second sports this week during advisor.
The New England Competition begins on Friday 30 April for boys, and Friday 7 May for girls. New England organisers are hoping to run Term 2 as 10s rugby for girls, with the 7s comp starting in Term 3. All boys games are 15s.
Games will be played in Armidale, Inverell and Tamworth with the draw hopefully completed before the end of term.
Fixtures against Kinross Wolaroi School will see all players travel to Coonabarabran on Saturday 24 April. This will be a day trip where all players will travel by bus leaving around 6.30am. TAS will also be hosting Farrar as an additional fixture in rugby and other activities on 10 June 2021

NCIS Secondary Swimming
Wet and wonderful, that’s the best way to sum up last Thursday’s NCIS Secondary Swimming Championships. Held at the sensationally fast Alstonville Pool, conditions proved challenging, but far from insurmountable for the 28 TAS swimmers who were keen for some competition.
With the relays off first, this provides the athletes with an opportunity to get “into” the day’s events through the best possible means, a team experience. Getting the nerves out and hitting the water gives one confidence as the following races were the 200IM. Performances throughout the day were terrific, despite frequent downpours and a bout of sickness for 5, all swimmers continued to step onto the blocks and hammer away. The depth of the squad, particularly amongst the Juniors, was awesome to witness and shows some great talent coming through.
Overall results were the best ever for TAS, coming 3rd on pointscore and 2nd on percentages (number of students relative to each school). Jordie Cullen (12 years) and Karen Baker (17 years) were their respective age group winners, with Miller Harwood (13 years), Iles Baker (14 years), Matilda Cullen (15 years), Ruby Straker (16 years) and Oliver Griffiths (17 years) being awarded runners-up. The following students also qualified for NSW CIS Swimming; Charlie Ward, Jordie Cullen, Isabella Henderson, Poppy Hall, Matilda Cullen, Prudence Black, Ruby Straker, Holly Dauparas, Isabella Banister, Karen Baker, Eliza Ward, Miller Harwood, Iles Baker, Brock Galvin, Abbott White, Harry Pennington, James Collum, Toby Michell-Smith, Oliver Griffiths, Samuel Ball and John McGregor-Thew.
Many thanks to our Captains, Eliza Ward and John McGregor-Thew who not only swam incredibly well, but supported the students and were lovely role models. My thanks also to Mrs Banister, Mr Harwood and Miss Lily for their help throughout the 2 days away.

NSW Juniors Athletics Championships
On Sunday 14 March, Toby Hall and Joshua Casey took on the toughest challenge in Track and Field, the Steeplechase. With 4 barriers and 1 water jump per lap, its not an event for the faint of heart, rather more aimed at those who seek a true contest. The rain fell with such force, that athletes were soaked well before the gun went off, large puddles were evident throughout the race and the fear of getting wet via the water jump, was irrelevant.
Joshua lined up in the u/15 2000m Steeplechase, his first ever experience in this event. Settling into a positive rhythm early on, Joshua held great form over the barriers, never once resorting to jump off the top and raced hard to a 8:11 finish time and 5th place. This is an extremely impressive performance in one’s first time. For Toby, it was first time at the 3000m Steeplechase, having gone up an age group (and therefore an extra 1000m!). Having to clear the barriers at 91.4cm, this is no easy feat, especially as 7 laps equates to 35 jumps. Toby positioned himself sensibly from the start and displayed clear form throughout, running into 4th place and an 11:11 finish. This performance stamped Toby’s place into the Australian Championships to be held next month in Sydney.

Good morning everyone, just another report from the hb pencil with some information and requests for everyone who tuned in today to watch from home or wherever you are. As you can tell we are for the very first time streaming today’s middle school assembly. The production of this is completely run by students today being Ty Schalk-O’Brien, Sam Guppy, Tom Crowley, Andi Li, Abdulsalam Alkhathami, directed by Mr O’connell and Mr Cornford. As these assemblies progress, we would like to make them as enjoyable for you as possible. So if you have any requests on things to improve on please feel free to comment down below (Point downwards). And as I mentioned my boasting habits are getting out of hand (looking back at students). This assembly is completely run by you guys so if you are interested in joining the stream team, come see Mr O’connell, Mr Cornford or myself. Now everyone please don’t run to the dining hall, we’re all going to get food don’t worry this has actually become a bit of a more serious incident as a member of staff was nearly knocked over, if you need to attend a music lesson or other function make sure you are signing out with Mrs Frost and there is to be no use of hard leather – six stitch cricket balls at break times. Hello Middle school and welcome parents to our first-ever virtual assembly. Just another debating update. Last Thursday a middle school team of Stella Marlouis, Sophie Hardin and myself went down to Calrossy to compete against Calrossy. Well done to those debaters for successfully affirming the topic “Zoos should be banned”. In other news the Maths Pi day was yesterday. Thank you to Moxon’s Bakery for supplying morning tea and the dining hall staff for the delicious pie and chips. And another huge thank you to the Maths department and Ms Robins for organizing the day and making it a really enjoyable experience. Another reminder about assessments, there have been many assessments already handed out and a lot still to come. If you are feeling worried about anything or are unsure of what to do please ask your teachers as they are here to help. Also for the parents, parent-teacher interviews are coming up next Wednesday for year 6 and 7 in middle school.
Creative Arts Leader – Sam Krishnan
Good morning Middle School, and friends and family watching from home, as the creative arts leader I not only encourage activity in creative arts but I also would like to acknowledge achievements in this aspect of school life. So today I would like to acknowledge a student here in this audience whose artwork has been selected to be shown in the 2021 Operation Art Touring exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW. So please can we give a well-deserved round of applause to Year 7 student Siri Sparkes. Siri describes her artwork as a picture of her puppy looking into the sky with which she painted a mane with lots of different coloured lines and dots The virtual opening event video can be viewed at 3 pm on the 17th of March, If you want to have a good look at the artwork go to the Operation art Facebook and, well, enjoy it. Moving on the annual Middle school play is starting to form and we will be performing Revolting Rhymes by Roald Dahl. I was in the play last year and the performance was amazing, Mr Wheatley was amazing and the experience was amazing so I highly recommend to audition and participate in the play. If you’re nervous, that’s alright because as a wise person once said “you will always have butterflies but what you need to learn is to teach them to fly in formation.” Thank you

Good morning everyone,
I really wanted to congratulate the swimmers who went to NCIS last Thursday, it’s a massive achievement and you should be very proud of yourselves. Just a further reminder that this is assessment period and it can be difficult juggling your different commitments, so if you have to miss any extra-curricular activities could you please contact the coach or person in charge to let them know you can’t make it. This is a courtesy to staff. For the parents, if your child is sick or can’t make it to school for any reason, can you please contact the Middle School reception to let them know. Thank you. I would also like to acknowledge Mr Barrett’s recent email about the cricket oval and Backfield. It is extremely important we remain off these fields so they are ready for the rugby season. Now as a new addition to our assemblies I would like to wish a happy birthday to everyone who has a birthday this past fortnight. So, Happy birthday to Year 6 Rafferty Tonkin, Year 7 Clare McDouall, Hunter Moorcroft and Connor Sweeney, Year 8 Millie Coupland, James Hunt, Ben Price and Claire Watt. Hope week 8 is going well for you all.
Just a reminder to show up to your sports training, we would like to finish off the first Term off well so keep it up and stay strong.
Athletics carnival is coming up on Friday 26th march so a week and a bit from now. Hope you’re preparing well for this and we are getting a great number of participants which is how you can contribute to winning the carnival with your house. The events this week are 3000m today at 3:45pm and triple jump, then on thursday the 1500m race at 3:45pm A big reminder to not go on backfield and the cricket oval please.

During Boarders weekend Marshall Kellet played a semi-final game with the Dorrigo Cricket clubs under 14’s. The Dorrigo club beat Macksville cricket club at Macksville and will now proceed to the Grand final next Saturday against nana-Glenn. This will be an away game for Dorrigo and the third grand final in 4 years for Marshall and his fellow teammates. Can we please give a round of applause?
Over the weekend year 8 student Josh Casey went to state at Sydney Olympic park to compete in the under 14’s state 2 kilometre steeplechase. Josh just managed to miss out on Nationals by coming 5th. Well done josh. Can we please give a round of applause?

Assessments! Students in Year 6-8 are feeling the pressure of having to complete assessments. To help support students, all assessment notifications, revision materials and practice questions/papers (where applicable) are available on CANVAS. The Learning Hub is also open Monday – Thursdays after school, and is a great environment for students to prepare in – it is quiet, and there is teacher support available. Please help support your child with navigating through CANVAS materials, and encourage them to attend the Learning Hub to complete any work with the support of academic staff.

Friday 18 March Activities Day Athletics - Day 1
This Friday will be our first day of our Athletics Carnival, the program is attached below and available on the Junior School website. Having a lead in day provides initial momentum for our students in a number of events allowing for a more meaningful and constructive day is possible for the carnival, Thursday March 25. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately in their House Sports Uniform (coloured polo-shirts and sports gear. Parents are welcome on campus, but must use the NSW Services QR code and TAS Visitor Sign in before attending.
International Maths Day
Congratulations and thank you to all those involved in our recent IMD – 2021 celebrations. Who would have thought a Day for Maths would have been so much fun?! And it was a hotly contested poster competition which was highlighted in today’s assembly as you can see from the photo below. Special mention goes to Layla Abu Assab for her winning poster (which can be seen in the middle of this wonderful array of a small number of the entries…)
COVID Restrictions and Junior School
From last week, you may have read that NSW schools have been able to ease restrictions which is a very pleasing turn of events for all concerned. It does not however, mean a complete return to pre-COVID routines. All organisations are required to have COVID Safety Plans and Management Practices in place and therefore the following applies.
As set out below, the arrivals and departures for Junior School students will not change. All Junior School parents coming onto the school campus for any reason must sign into the Junior School Reception Visitor Sign In system as well as register with the NSW Services QR codes located around the school. COVID Safety measures (care with hygiene and social distancing) are still in place until further notice and we ask all parents to continue to be cautious to ensure the well-being and safety of our school community.
If you require assistance, please make contact with the Junior School Reception on 67765817 or ring the Main School Reception and ask to be put through to me directly.
Punctuality and Arrival/Departures from Junior School
It is important for children to arrive to school with plenty of time to settle into the day by playing with their friends in the playground before moving to class. There will always be the occasional late arrival, but we ask all parents to understand the nature of the morning routine and make a special effort to have children to school well ahead of the first lesson of the day. This is important as late arrivals cause disruption for everyone. Our playgrounds are supervised from 8.15 am. The arrival and departure systems for Junior School students and families seem to be working effectively but we do ask again that ALL families display their printed family nametag supplied by the school on the left-hand sun visor as this greatly assists with the collection of students. If another sign is needed for a second car, please contact JS Reception.
NSW Government Creative Kids Program
The NSW Government is helping kids get creative with the new Creative Kids program.
Parents, guardians and carers can apply for a voucher with a value of up to $100 per calendar year for each student aged 4.5 to 18 years old enrolled in school.
The voucher may be used with a registered activity provider for registration, participation and tuition costs for creative arts, speech, drama, dance, digital design, coding, and music lessons and activities.
The voucher can be used at any time during the calendar year it was issued.
To use the voucher, give the details to your registered activity provider.
The program runs year-round, so kids can get creative at any time.
Reading Club – Well done to our School Leaders
I would like to commend our JS School Leaders who are rising to the task each and every day in Junior School, including attending our SRC meetings and getting several projects that they have in mind off the ground This week, I would like to mention Jack Wood and Arthur White who had their first Reading Club session and from all reports, it was a great success (as we can see…). I look forward to bringing more great examples of leadership to you over the next few weeks.

Primary Years Programme-Units of Inquiry
This week many of our classes will commence a new unit of inquiry (UOI). The units of inquiry from Year 1 to Year 5 generally run for six to seven weeks.
However, a UOI is never really finished. As educators we hope that our students still have wonderings and questions to continue exploring and action to be taken based on new knowledge and understandings that link to previous learning.
We aim for our students to approach their learning with a spirit of inquiry.
All UOI have been carefully planned with the end goal that our students will develop new and deeper understandings. This process may involve:

- experimenting and playing with possibilities
- making connections between previous learning and current learning and
- making predictions.

Junior School Sport
Winter Sport
Thank you to all children who have returned their Winter Sport choices last week. Teams are now being organised and coaches allocated. Winter sports will commence after the Easter Holiday. Please ensure you have all equipment ready for the start of training in Week 2, next term.
Summer Sport
Our Summer sports programme concludes next Monday, 22 March for most sports. Thank you to all children who have shown commitment and dedication to their sport this term. There will be no training in Week 10.
Athletics Carnival and Pre-Carnival Events
This Friday, 19 March will see some events being held for our annual Athletics Carnival. Seniors will be competing in the shot put event and our Intermediates will be competing in their Long Jump event. All other children will be practising sprints, relays and some field events during the day. Children are to wear their House coloured t-shirts and sports gear on Friday. Please ensure your child also has a hat and water bottle for the events.
Our Junior School Athletics Carnival will be held next Thursday, 25 March. More information about the carnival will be in next week’s TAS talks.
Registration for Football is now open
All players need to register with the Sports Union Football League https://www.sportune.com.au/football-league/#rego prior to the 31 March, 2021.
Active Kids vouchers can be redeemed during this process.

It was the semi-finals and we knew if we won, we were into the finals but if we lost, we would be out of the tournament. On Friday in the TAS gym, it was TAS v Sandon Shiners.
In the first half, Ethan scored 2 goals. Cecilia saved two goals for her team.
In the second half, Levi, Ethan and Lochie all shot well and scored goals. Humjot was great in defence. The team was on fire! We were playing so well that we were winning by a landslide. We won 7-1 and are through to the finals!

TAS White
TAS White played City White in the semi-finals on Friday. It was an evenly matched game. They kept us on our toes and we rose to the challenge especially with our passes and movement on the court. We lost Mila to an elbow injury in the first half and it was nice to see the good sportsmanship from the opposition as they stopped to check in on our injured player. City White scored one goal and then it was half time.
Our defence was strong in the second half and we did not concede any more points. Unfortunately, we did not score any either. Our 1-0 loss means we are out of the competition. It was an excellent season and we all improved a lot.
Gymnastics
What a delightful group of gymnasts we had today. All participants were full of enthusiasm and energy ready for another wonderful training session.
The students rotated through 4 activities.

A favourite activity of all is the final circuit. Today was no exception as all enjoyed jumping along the extended trampoline and jumping into the pit, which was full of sponges.
It is rewarding to see the continued growth of the students and to witness their growth in balance and motor skill development.
