St Christopher’s Orphanage, Fiji

The rewards from making a meaningful contribution to the lives of others is something unforgettable, and it is no wonder that the Year 8 Christian service project to St Christopher’s Orphanage in Fiji continues to enjoy strong support.

Continuing a long tradition, students from The Armidale School assist the Anglican Sisters of the Community of the Sacred Name make the orphanage a better place to live in. The majority of the children at the home are orphans or are there because they have been abused, neglected or abandoned by their families. Students offer themselves in service to St Christopher’s in any way they can while at the home.

Their community service has included painting dormitories, making wooden furniture, and giving the orphanage the gift of hot water, installing three hot water tanks, 54 solar panels and associated equipment they spent 12 months fundraising for.

Apart from service to others, the students experience a different cultural environment, gain a better understanding of themselves and learn to consider the needs of others.

Participants invariably describe their time at St Christopher’s as a transformative experience which re-calibrates their values and gives them a strong sense of what is most important in life.
